Get Ready for a New Year of Golf

For those of us in the Northen parts of North America the golf season is just around the corner. It's time to get your golf clubs out and dust off your shoes. It's nearly tee time!

I can't wait to golf this year. I'm itching to get back on the green.

For those of you who are new to the game, the beginning of the season is a terrific time to get out there and learn. Everyone's in such a good mood that you'll likely get plenty of help from strangers, and club owners alike. Plus, the sooner you get out there the sooner you'll learn. And before you know it, by mid to end of season you'll be a pro!

Just remember take it slow. BUT - most vet golfers hate slow players! So I do recommend going during times when your course isn't very busy. This way you're able to take your time and you wont feel the added pressure of the regulars breathing down your back. To avoid such situations it's always best to start at 'starter' courses where the golfers who attend already know that you may be a beginner. Or, what I've also found is that if you golf during happy hour, most people could care less whether you're slow or not. They just want to take their time with a few cold beers as they golf.

How To Golf - The Takeaway

Learning how to golf requires not just getting your setup routine down, but working on all aspects of your golf swing. The next step, and a very important aspect, to your golf swing is your takeway. The takeaway is the 'pull-back'. It's how you wind up prior to your swing.

This video shows you how to do just that. Just click on the video to play it:

Wasn't that a great video? Ok, seriously, here's a video by Golf Instructor Steve Bishop: Golf Tips, Lessons, Instruction & Drills - The Takeaway

Now that's a great video! Remember, to combine the setup routine and the takeaway to get your golf swing moving like a pro.

Learn How To Golf

You want to learn how to golf or just want to improve your game? We all do. And we all can.

One of the most important steps (and arguably the most important by some) to improving your golf game is your setup routine. That is, how you set yourself up (body, arms, legs, and head) to hit a golf ball.

Lucky for us, the 'setup' is probably the easiest to correct (or change) because its starts off static (that is, we're not moving yet). It's when we actually start our swing is when bad habits are more difficult to break.

Golfing is all about HOW we hit the golf ball. That means, where we hit it, with what amount of power we hit it with, and how we follow through during contact with ball and club.

Unfortunately, a major problem most golfers have is an inconsistent swing causing a slice or hook behind the ball or topping the ball. Such problems are likely due to your setup routine.

Setting yourself up properly allows you to smoothly go through the 5 steps of the golf swing with power, control, and accuracy.

As with anything, it will take practice, so be patient and try not to get frustrated. This is especially true if you're trying to break a bad habit.

The General Setup:

Position yourself so that your feet are approximately shoulder width apart. Don't worry too much about it being exactly shoulder width apart. A slightly wider or narrower stance is fine if it's more comfortable. You may want a wider stance for longer clubs and a narrower stance for shorter clubs. Note that, a stance that is too wide will make turning difficult and a stance that is too narrow will make balancing difficult. For a right handed golfer, keep your left foot pointing forward, not to the left. The same goes for left handed golfers and their right foot.

The ball should be half way between your feet. Some clubs will perform better if you place the ball a little closer to the front or the back. That's fine, but practice hitting the ball in the middle of your stance first. Once you're a more comfortable golfer you may wish to experiment by moving the ball slightly toward your trailing foot for the shorter irons or slightly toward your leading foot for longer irons.

Keep your back straight, and your knees slightly bent. Don't lock your knees. Your spine acts as the axis of your swing.

Hold your club straight out in front of you extending your arms as far as possible without straining them. Next while keeping the club parallel to the ground and straight in-front of you lower the club, still keeping it parallel to the ground, down to about the height of your belly button. Don't worry if your wrists are bent slightly. This is natural as you maintain the clubs position.

Next, bend forward at your hips, keeping your back straight, until the club touches the ground. Now position the club and yourself as one solid object, accordingly to where the ball has been placed.

At this point, your back is still straight. your arms are still straight with the grip of the club straight out and now touching the ground. You are only bending forward from the hips and the ball is in the middle of your stance.

Now you're ready to improve your golf swing and your golf game! Practice this setup at the driving range and watch your swing improve with time!

Of course as any golfer knows, the setup is just the beginning.

If you want to improve even further. You need to work on your entire golf swing. From setup routine all the way to your follow through and final stance.
